MIKA MYLLÄRI & RALF NYQVIST DUO
Mika
Mylläri & Ralf Nyqvist duo has a long history. They started to
play together back in early -80's. The duo created it's own style and
sound by combining Finnish and Swedish folksongs with jazz, and was
soon playing all around the festivals and other events. They lerned the jazz
idiom by traveling together to New York by regulary basis. The rich
folkmusic knowledge came in their veins with the mothermilk.
Mika Mylläri started his own MMQ band in early -90's and the band was immediat
e success. Mika's international carrier started when he moved to Paris in the 1993. He broke in
to the London jazz scene in the 1997 and have played and recorded since
then with Ed Jones Quintet, Jonthan Gee Quartet and US3 among others.
Ralf Nyqvist got seriously in to the composing and arranging late
-80's. He has studied in the Swedish royal music academy and Sibelius
Academy. Ralf has been wanted writer a long time, propably because his
musical knowledge is so wide and he always seems to find a way of
ceating his own sound in every situation. He works for televisions,
theaters, big bands, choirs and classical bands.
Lullabies
M&N Duo started to work together after a long paus in the 2003.
Music that would come to their first album as duo!, could have been a
collection of their compositions, but they wanted to get in to the
original sound of the M&N Duo. So, they took a handfull of
traditional folksongs from Finland and started to arrange those famous
melodys. The lullabie (lullaby) theme came from the litle children of
both familys,(Mika's Rebekka and Eerika was born during the prosess of
this album)! -so, a serious lullaby album..
Musically the themes are presenting finnish countryside, the people,
nature and the vibe from north. Ralf's arrangements are presenting the M&N
harmony and the sound completes by Mika's dreamy trumpeting. Some songs
has a string quartet behind and around, some has reeds, and some are
pure duo. Strings and reeds are in the same roll than samples had in
M&N Duo's music back-80's. They are simply creating a special
soundscape underneath the duo's improvisations.
Stings and reeds are from the Vaasa Symphony orchestra, vocalist Marika
Westerling is presenting the old finnish folkchant, Jorma Ojanperä
on double bass gives the flavour of the jazzjam, rest of the sounds on
the album are by M&N.
The release date of Lullabies was 10.11.2005
